About the event

Wellbeing Among LGBTQ+ Foster Youth


The first half of the training will review peer-reviewed research that discusses the increased mental health challenges, substance use, homelessness, and placement instability that LGBTQ+ foster youth. Specifically, compared to their non-LGBTQ+ peers, LGBTQ+ foster youth are:

  1. Placed in more foster homes (Schaub, et al., 2022)

  2. More likely to age out of care  (Rodriguez, et al., 2024)

  3. 6.5 times more likely to experience homelessness (Rodriguez, et al., 2024)

  4. 3-5 times more likely to satisfy the diagnostic criteria of depression (Dettlaf, et al., 2018)
