Court-Appointed
Special Advocates

Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) make a life-changing difference for children who have experienced abuse or neglect. Each volunteer is appointed by a judge to advocate for a child’s best interest in court. Our volunteers help judges develop a fuller picture of each child’s life. Their advocacy enables judges to make the most well-informed decision for each child.

CASA Volunteer Spotlight

Christine S., CASA Advocate

Two sibling toddlers entered foster care after experiencing unsafe living conditions and parental substance abuse. One sibling had been hospitalized with a fractured arm, and both children faced instability they were too young to understand. About 10 months into the case, Christine was appointed as their CASA, becoming a steady, caring presence in their lives.

Christine quickly built trust with the toddlers. She supported the children through visits and court proceedings and helped their parents connect with resources to meet case plan goals. One sibling would often become upset when Christine had to leave, a testament to the strong bond she had formed with them.

As time went on, parental progress fluctuated, and the case plan goal was eventually switched to adoption. Christine later met with both parents to discuss case plan progress. It was noted that Christine was one of the few people who made Mom feel comfortable, allowing them to build a trusting relationship.

Christine became someone who helped keep Mom accountable to her court-ordered goals. The consistent shifts in Mom’s behavior and steady completion of case plan goals allowed the case plan to switch back to reintegration, returning the children to Mom’s care just a few months later.

Through Christine’s guidance and advocacy, the family regained stability and unity, with support connecting them to necessary resources after reintegration. The case closed successfully six months later.

Even after the case closed, Christine remains a trusted presence, demonstrating that a CASA’s impact can touch the entire family.
